Soy vs. Beeswax vs. Paraffin Candles — Which Should You Buy?

Every wax trades off three things: scent throw (how far fragrance carries), burn time, and price. There's no single best wax — which is why many boutique makers blend them.

Soy

Made from soybean oil, soy is the default at most small-batch candle shops. It burns slower and cooler than paraffin (roughly 30–50% longer per ounce), produces minimal soot, and holds color and fragrance in a soft, creamy look. Its cold throw is excellent; its hot throw is milder than paraffin — soy candles scent a bedroom well but may underwhelm in an open-plan space. Frosting (a white crystalline bloom) is cosmetic and normal.

Beeswax

The premium natural option. Beeswax burns longest of all common waxes, gives a warm amber light, and has a light natural honey scent — most beeswax candles are sold unscented or lightly scented. It's the priciest wax and the hardest to scent strongly, so it suits people who want clean, long-burning ambiance over big fragrance.

Paraffin

A petroleum-derived wax and still the industry workhorse — because nothing beats its hot scent throw. Strongly scented brands and most mass-market candles are paraffin or paraffin-blend. It burns faster and can produce more soot with an untrimmed wick, but a well-made paraffin candle burned properly is safe in normal use. If you want a candle to perfume a whole floor, paraffin blends deliver.

Coconut (and blends)

Coconut wax is the newer luxury base: creamy appearance, slow burn, and very good throw, usually blended with soy or a little paraffin for structure. "Coconut-soy" or "coco-apricot" blends dominate the high-end boutique market.

• Longest burn, natural light: beeswax
• Clean-burning everyday candle: soy or coconut-soy
• Strongest room-filling scent: paraffin or paraffin blend
• Luxury gift: coconut blend in a heavy vessel
